The New Heart Center for Fitness and Wellness, a program of the New Mexico Heart Institute Foundation offers a comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation program to individuals who have suffered from heart problems. This Cardiac Rehab program is housed in a wonderful 14,000 square-foot facility that provides a safe and healing place for individuals with a wide variety of cardiac problems to recover back to good or even better health. New Heart is located at 601 Lomas Blvd. NE, just east of downtown Albuquerque.

Research has consistently shown cardiovascular rehabilitation for those who have had a heart attack, angioplasty, heart surgery or heart failure is powerful medicine in helping patients recover more quickly back to good health and in many cases to better health. Cardiac rehabilitation reduces the risk for future heart problems such as the need for repeat hospitalization, angioplasty or heart surgery.

The New Heart Center for Fitness and Wellness offers a comprehensive pulmonary rehabilitation program of care designed at a individual level. This pulmonary rehab program provides a safe and healing place for individuals with a wide variety of chronic pulmonary problems to help increase overall quality of life.

The New Heart program teaches lifelong habits which will include an exercise program to improve fitness, flexibility, strength and balance. The program additionally provides the patient with the nutritional information that they need to have a heart healthy diet. Life coaches play an important role in helping patients find motivation to engage in exercise and healthy nutrition.

To Start You Will

Take a gentle walking test

Have a New Heart physician evaluation

You Will Then

Work with an exercise physiologist to create an exercise prescription. You will review your exercise prescription before each session with your exercise specialist.


The Heart Smart Lifestyle Consists of:

   ♥ One on One consult with a nutrition specialist

   ♥ Nutrition classes and workshops emphasizing the Mediterranean diet

   ♥ Evaluation and recommendations regarding cholesterol, blood pressure and weight management

All of this is done in concert with your healthcare provider.

Before You Start

♥ Talk to your doctor about pulmonary rehabilitation and have them send us a referral.

♥ Complete an initial assessment with a cardiologist and pulmonary specialist.

You Will Then

♥ Receive your individualized exercise routine supervised by exercise specialists with oxygen monitoring.


The Pulmonary Rehabilitation program contains:

   ♥ 36 sessions, 3 times per week

   ♥ Healthy diet and lifestyle tips

   ♥ Evaluation and recommendations regarding cholesterol, blood pressure and weight management

All of this is done in concert with your healthcare provider.

The Heart Smart Lifestyle Consists of:

   ♥ One on One consult with a nutritionist

   ♥ Nutrition classes and workshops emphasizing the Mediterranean diet

   ♥ Evaluation and recommendations regarding cholesterol, blood pressure and weight management

Lifestyle Coaching | At New Heart you will also have access to Lifestyle Coaching which will help you evaluate emotional issues including stress, feelings of anger, anxiety or depression. These are all factors that create heart disease and can limit your rehabilitation.

Medication Assessment | You will have access to:

   ♥ A full medication review including supplements

   ♥ Education on “why” you are taking your medications

   ♥ Clear instruction on how to take your medication correctly

Tobacco and E-Cigarettes | Cigarette smoking is the number one preventable cause of heart attacks and strokes. The New Heart program will give you a referral for a smoking cessation program.

Reduce Risk | The New Heart program will help you monitor and control your blood pressure, cholesterol and your waistline.
