New Heart \ New You

A fitness and wellness program for those at risk of heart disease

The New Heart Center is now offering a unique, prevention-as-treatment approach for patients who have heart disease or are at risk for developing heart disease. This unique personalized program is for men and women without symptoms, but whose family history, physical condition and other factors place them at higher risk for developing coronary artery disease. New Heart \ New You is also for patients who have had a heart attack, coronary angioplasty or coronary bypass surgery who want to improve their lifestyle to avoid further cardiac problems.

As a participant of this 36-session program, experts at the New Heart Center will help you develop an exercise program that you can live with, teach you to make healthy decisions to manage your weight and help you deal with stress.

New Heart \ New You is designed for people who want to do all they can to prevent coronary heart disease. It is also designed for individuals who suffer from heart disease but want to minimize potential complications. Anyone with risk factors for heart disease such as high cholesterol, hypertension or diabetes will benefit from this program.

How the New Heart \ New You  program works for:

Initial assessment: Patients will meet with Dr. Barry Ramo for an evaluation of your risk profile for cardiovascular disease. Basic laboratory data is required and in some cases a coronary calcium study. Your exercise capacity will be evaluated with a treadmill test to help us tailor an exercise program for you.

Exercise Program: Exercise is the central component of the program. This 36-session program is designed to help you see exercise as enjoyable and empowering. Experts at the New Heart Center will help each patient find a form of exercise that is enjoyable and manageable after the program finishes. Armed with improved fitness, patients often continue to enjoy exercise after the program is completed. On your first day your trainer will outline a program using the exercise equipment at New Heart Center’s amazing 6000 square foot facility. During the 36-sessions, you will have frequent discussions with the trainer as you move into more vigorous aerobic and anaerobic exercise.

Nutrition and Weight Management: At least 80% of secondary heart attacks are due to lifestyle. Preventing cardiovascular disease requires a commitment to a healthy heart diet. Through this program, the New Heart Center’s dietician works with patients on a weekly basis to help them understand how to cook, eat out, and shop for food in an effort to make healthier choices. The typical goal for participants of this 36-session program is a 10% weight loss. Simple changes in diet can help patients reverse hypertension, diabetes, sleep apnea and abnormal serum lipid levels.

Stress Management: Although it is a normal part of life, stress can have major harmful effects on one’s health. Daily stresses often lead to insomnia, anxiety, depression and fatigue. These symptoms tend to lead to lack of exercise and an unhealthy diet. Essentially, stress needs to be managed especially when you are at risk for heart disease. Psychologists at the New Heart Center teach stress management with healthy habits in mind.

Weekly Stress management classes are held to help patients develop appropriate responses to the daily stresses that we all encounter.

If you would like to change your health and risk factors and learn to live and maintain a healthy lifestyle, this highly affordable program is perfect for you.
